Literacy

Here at Scoil Ghobnatan we place a significant emphasis on the importance of literacy in the school lives of all our children. With this in mind we provide a number of literacy initiatives with the aim of further developing the childrens’ skills in literacy areas suach as oral communication, reading, writing and comprehension.

The literacy initiatives we promote include:

Literacy Lift Off

Literacy Lift Off is an early intervention programme aimed at raising literacy levels in reading and writing. It is run from 1st class through to 6th class. Literacy Lift Off involves staff members and also with the kind assistance of parents. Classes are divided into groups and each staf member/parent will take responsibility for a group. The stations consist of reading groups, writing groups, word work group, an oral language group and an independent station. The children rotate around the different stations spending 7 minutes at each station during the period. It runs for four days of each week for approximately six weeks.

At home, parents are encouraged to listen to their child reading each evening. Children bring home a book each night- this book will have been read during Literacy Lift Off that day.

Literacy Lift Off has proven to be a very successful programme where the children learn and progress quickly in an enjoyable and hands on environment. As each child works at a level that is appropriate to their ability, confidence and positivity towards reading and writing grows daily.

Whole School Approach to Phonics

Scoil Ghobnatan adopts a whole school approach to phonics which begins with the basic sounds and letter formation and moves to more complex sounds and spellings linked with reading and comprehension. Children learn their phonics hand in hand with learning to read, meanwhile those children with difficulties reading further up the school fill gaps and make clear progress through the programme. This method of phonics teaching is both systematic and repetitive in order to imbed the learning while also being entertaining and fun for all of the children; the combination of which makes for very effective learning.
