Junior Infants Work at Home – Week: May 25th – May 29th 2020

  1. Jolly phonics Sounds Bag: Continue to revise all sounds in the Sound Bag every day.  Your child is only saying the sound the letter makes. Encourage your child to think of words which begin/contain each sound!

Encourage your child to make short words using their sound cards  e.g. f-o-g, r-ai-n, p-o-t…etc.

Encourage your child to pick out the letters in their name and see if they can place them in the right order .

‘Geraldine the Giraffe’ series is available on youtube and is a fun way to revise sounds

  1. Tricky Words:

These words need to be learnt as a sight word i.e. When your child sees these words he/she needs to say these words immediately. All junior infant tricky words have been completed.  Please continue to revise all tricky words every day.

Concentrate this week on words 1-5 (I, the, he, she ,me). Can your child make these words using the letters in their sound bag?   Your child might also like to write each word a few times in their writing copy.

  1. Rhyme: Revise ‘Little Bo Peep’ …’ & the other rhymes in the folder.

This week we will revisit ‘Little Bo Peep’ . Please encourage your child to put their Peter Pointer finger under each word as they share read with you. Your child can read any word that they know and you can read the words that they have difficulty with. Please focus on tricky words and simple 3 letter words which your child can sound out. Your child can draw a ring around any words that they can identify / read.

Your child should be able to say the rhyme independently, nice and slowly.

Ask your child questions e.g. Where do you think the sheep went to? Why did they go there do you think? If you were Little Bo Peep what would you do? Would you like to have pet sheep? Why / Why not?

  1. Blending: Help your child to sound out the sounds in these words. Encourage your child to say each of the sounds individually first e.g. b-i-t = bit.

Parents, please write these words as a list in your child’s Homework Copy.

Monday:                               bit, let

Tuesday:                               tub, lick

Wednesday:                          sniff, soft

Thursday:                              frog, luck

Friday:                                   cup, not

Blend each of the words every evening and encourage your child to put the words into sentences.

  1. Number Work: Count up to 20 and back from 10.  Start at a different number each time e.g. 4,5,6,7,8,9,10   ,  6,7,8,9,10.  Which number is bigger / smaller  5 or 3?  Ask your child to do 5 Jumping Jacks / 3 stamps / 4 claps …etc. Pick a different number each time.  Parent does some jumps/ claps and ask your child’ how many jumps/ claps did I do?’
  1. Maths: Continue practicing combining (adding numbers). When learning to combine, we say ‘3and 1 make 4’).

We do not use the signs + and = until Senior Infants.

Continue practicing the same activities as last week as this is a topic that requires lots of practice.

Use everyday objects (concrete materials) and involve your child in lots of meaningful and hands-on experiences:

  • Combine (add) objects as follows:

-2 teaspoons and 2 dessertspoons make 4 spoons altogether

-3 red Lego pieces and 1 blue piece make 4 pieces altogether

  • When setting the table for breakfast or dinner, your child can add (combine) the forks, knives, plates, etc. ● Encourage your child to use his/her fingers when combining.
  • Allow your child to discover that 3 and 1 is the same as 1 and 3.

– Use real objects, such as fruit, sweets, cups, toys, spoons, plates, etc.

-Say the following: ‘I have 3 red apples and 1 green apple. You have 1 red apple and 3 green apples. We both have 4 apples.’

  • Play a game called ‘Find the Correct Amount’. Say the number 2, 3, 4 or 5 – your child has to find that number of objects in the kitchen, bedroom or sitting room. This activity will provide lots of opportunities to discuss the various components of number. For example, your child can describe what he/she found: ‘I have 3 spoons and 2 eggcups. I have 5 objects altogether.’

By using everyday experiences and real objects, your child will learn and remember all the number facts (components of number).

  1. Reading: Read some books at home. Look at and chat about the pictures. See if you can spot any tricky word or if you can read any short word by blending. Look at the pictures in the book . Ask your child to show you various objects in the picture by giving clues  g. show me something that rhymes / sounds like chair….bear   ,  show me something that shines in the sky …..sun,   show me something that beings with a ‘b’ sound …..boat ….etc.
