Social Story – A Teams Call With Teacher

When books are being collected from the school at the prescribed times for each class level during the week beginning Jan 11th, each pupil will receive a username and password which will allow them access to Microsoft Office365 – this online resource will allow each child access a range of Microsoft features such as Word, PowerPoint, Outlook (email) and Microsoft Teams.

MONDAY

1.Jolly Phonics

( Please remember your child is not saying the name of the sound. He/she is only saying the sound that the letter makes.)

(a) Revise each sound in the Sound bag.      New sound for week ‘m’

(b)Cut out the ’m’ sounds and put it into the ‘Sounds bag’ along with the sounds that we have already learnt in school)

(c)Encourage your child to think of words which begin with the ‘m’ sound e.g., moon, mouse, mouth

2.Tricky Words  –

(These words need to be learnt as a sight word i.e., when your child sees these words, he/she needs to say these words immediately. These words cannot be sounded out.)

  • Revise all words learnt to date in the Tricky Word Folder.‘I, the, he, she, me, we’
  • Can you think of some sentences with these words e.g. I love going for a walk… I like playing the game Simon Says etc…

Encourage your child to use the sounds from their Sound bag to make the words ‘sit’           and ‘it’.

  1. Nursery Rhyme : Revise nursery rhymes completed before Christmas. What is your favourite rhyme? Why? Which rhyme is the funniest? Why do you think this?
  1. Cracking Maths pg. 24 Length: Colour the longest on each row.
  1. Pre Reading Activity Book pg. 39 Colour the one that is the same in each row.

TUESDAY

  1. Jolly Phonics 
    • Revise all sounds in the sounds bag. Focus on the ‘m’ sound.
    • Look at the pictures on the ‘m’ page of your child’s Sound Booklet. Say them together e.g., monkey, medicine, mad, medal, mouse…. Can you hear the ‘m’ sound? Is it at the beginning, middle or end of the word?
    • I spy! Looking around your home can you find things that begin with the ‘m’ sound. e.g., mirror, mat etc.
  1. Tricky Words :Revise all words in the Tricky Word Bag.

    • -Cut out the word ‘be’ and put it into the Tricky Word Bag.
    • Encourage your child to look at and say this word without sounding it out. Think of different sentences with this word e.g. ‘I would like to be a doctor when I grow up’… ‘Will you be my friend? ‘Would you like to be on my team?’…

  1. Nursery Rhyme: We will revisit the rhyme ‘Humpty Dumpty’ (Please read note for term 2 inside Nursery Rhyme Booklet). Share read ‘Humpty Dumpty’ with your child. Model good reading by encouraging and showing your child how to put his/her finger under the words as you read together. Are there any words he/she knows? Maybe a tricky word we have learnt e.g., the word ‘the’. Encourage your child to colour in this word wherever he/she can find it. Maybe you could pick out simple words like sat, a, men. With your child encourage him/her to sound (blend) some of these words s-a-t, m-e-n. He/she can colour in these words on the page using different colours.
  1. My Pencil Control Work Book pg. 7: (Girl) Trace the dotted lines. Remember to hold your pencil properly! Colour in the girl. How is she feeling? How do you know?
  1. Cracking Maths pg. 28: Ring the longer object. Do you have a long/short pencil? Have you ever seen a long snake?

WEDNESDAY

  1. Jolly Phonics:
    • Revise each sound in the Sound bag.
    • Focus on ‘m’ sound. Can your child remember the jolly phonics ‘m’ song and action (rubbing tummy and saying mmm)

  • Can your child remember any of the words beginning with ‘m’ which were in our sound’s booklet e.g., Monkey, moon, milk etc.

  • Encourage your child to air trace the correct formation of the letter m using his/her Peter Pointer finger. (Refer to handwriting sheet in Homework Folder for correct formation and words to use when forming the letter ‘m’).

(b)Put some sounds together to make words e.g., s-a-t, r-a-t, t-a-n-, n-a-p

(c)Focus on ‘m’ sound. Can you think of any words with ‘m’ sound at the beginning?

(d)Can you think of any words where ‘m’ sound is at the end? E.g., pram, swim etc.

(e) Continue to encourage your child to air trace the correct formation of the letter ‘m’ using his/her Peter Pointer finger. (Refer to hand writing sheet in Homework Folder for correct formation and words to use when forming the letter ‘m’)

Revise all words in the Tricky Word Bag.

  1. Blending Folder: Revise blending and segmenting the following words:
    • Page 1, words  sit, it, pan, tap
    • Encourage your child to use their sounds from their Sound Bag to make the above words.
  1. Nursery Rhyme: Humpty Dumpty: Continue to share read the rhyme ‘Humpty Dumpty’ finding and focusing on the words the and sat, a, and
  1. Sounds Make Words page 33. (m) Say the ‘m’ words. Write the letter ‘m’. Draw a ‘m’ word.
  2. Just Handwriting Practice Copy pg. 1 Write the letter ‘c’. Draw a picture for the letter ‘c’
    • Remember when we write the letter c we say ‘Up around and stop!) It is important we touch the two blue lines when we are writing the letter ‘c’.

(refer to handwriting sheet in Homework Folder for correct formation and words to use when writing the letter ‘c’).

  • Encourage your child to practice writing the letter in the air first using their ‘Peter Pointer Finger’.
  • If you have play doh at home, your child can use it to make the letter ‘c’.  .
  • Continue to encourage your child to hold his/her pencil properly ‘Between Tommy Thumb and Peter Pointer with Middle Man helping! Ruby Ring and Baby Small go to sleep! Hold down the page with the hand not being used.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

  1. Rhyme for this week: 
  • This week we will learn a rhyme called Bubble Bubble‘. We will learn the next part of this rhyme next week!

  • Have you ever blown bubbles? Were the bubbles big or small? Do you like it?  Where did the bubbles go? Did you burst any of the bubbles? How did you do it?

2.Oral Maths:  Vocabulary: Long, longer, longest, short, shorter, shortest.

(a) Discuss length of items e.g. What toys do you have that are long/short? What is your longest/shortest toy?

(b) Has anybody in your family have long/short hair? Who has the longest/shortest hair? Etc

(c)  If you have play doh at home encourage your child to roll long/short snakes/sausages. Roll lots of different snakes/sausages. Which is the longest/shortest?

(d) House hunt! – What things in your house are long/short? E.g., long curtains…short spoons etc.

(a) Ask you child what day it is? (He/she might sing our days of the week song that we sing in school for you!)

(b) What is the new month we have?

(c)What season is it?  What is the weather like in winter?

(d) What is the new year we have?

(e) Ask your child about the Christmas holidays? Did he/she enjoy them? What was your child’s favourite part of the Christmas holidays? He/she might draw a picture of an activity they did during the holidays in their yellow news copy. (Blank yellow copy book where the children draw pictures).
